I’ve been texting my buddy weird messages lately.͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌ ͏‌

I texted this message to my friend last night, in all-caps:

“I DON’T CRY QUIETLY, FRANK!”

I think this is notable for several reasons, including the fact that my friend’s name is not Frank.

Hello, by the way! This is Andrew, from the TBTL podcast. I hope this email finds you well!

You see, I have this friend. His name is Houser (some people call him “Jonathan” or “J-Dog,” but I’m a traditionalist.) Houser is a filmmaker who’s teaching a class about professional lighting. Apparently, there are five aspects to lighting:

Intensity
Direction
Color
Quality
Falloff

I don’t know what most of that means, but it doesn’t matter, because I’m not the one being graded here. What I do know is that Houser is looking for a mnemonic device to help his students memorize this list of concepts. So he reached out to me. “You’re good with words,” he said. To which I replied, “ILLEGAL DRUGS CAUSE QUESTIONABLE FEELINGS?”

You get it: I, D, C, Q, F. It’s a mnemonic device!

This type of exercise, by the way, reminds me of the contrivance that some people use to remember the streets that run through the heart of Seattle: “JESUS CHRIST MADE SEATTLE UNDER PROTEST.” Those streets, running south to north, are

Jefferson
James
Cherry
Columbia
Marion
Madison
Spring
Seneca
University
Union
Pike
Pine

Unfortunately, that doesn’t help a person remember which street is Pike and which one is Pine, a question that often befuddled me even when I lived in Capitol Hill. Anyway, I digress.

I asked Houser if I could open this quest up to you, the Tens of Listeners. Maybe you have a better mnemonic device to help his students remember IDCQF. I should note here that the letters don’t have to be in that specific order, although that is the ideal order. Also, you can come up with another way to remember this -- it doesn’t have to be my particular memory mechanism. Maybe you can rearrange those letters to come up with a single word they spell. Or maybe even something more creative. According to Houser, “Bonus points if a song is made about it! 🤓”

I will warn you, though, I think I’ve already come up with the best mnemonic device to remember these letters and words in order. And I’m not even joking. I’ve put together a memorable sentence that I think is hard to beat:

“IMMORTAL DUCKS CAN QUACK FOREVER.”

Beat that, Tens! Send me your ideas via email here, and I’ll forward them to Jon. Class starts in four weeks.

Thanks, everyone! I hope you have a wonderful weekend. Luke and I will talk to you on Monday!

Ten Of The Week!

What’s your name and where do you live?
Stephanie Lee. Brooklyn, NY.

When did you start listening to TBTL? How did you find the show?
In 2009 after my then-boyfriend introduced me to this thing called "podcasts." NPR was my gateway drug, so I probably heard Luke on Wait Wait and then had a listen to TBTL.

How would your friends describe you?
Organized, thoughtful, a little to the side of silly, and never cuts corners. I love knitting, popcorn, dogs, jigsaw puzzles, word puzzles, and was once called the Eddie van Halen of spreadshee.

What was your favorite cereal when you were a kid? Is it still your fav?
Cracklin' Oat Bran. I know it has bran in the name but no worries, sugar is the second ingredient. I started making my own greek-style yogurt around 20 years ago, so it's been a while since I cracklin' it up.

What food do you love to eat the most of?
At the moment I'm on a real kick for chocolate chia seed pudding. But vanilla ice cream is always and forever and Chex Mix for any road trip.

What’s the best or worst nickname you ever had?
Step On Me. A boy in my kindergarten class couldn't make "f" sounds and that's what he settled on.

If you could play one song on TBTL, what would it be?
At my last haircut the salon was playing Laura Branigan singing Gloria. It was hard to stay still in my chair for my stylist!

EDITOR’S NOTE FROM ANDREW: After reading this from Stephanie, this song has been in my head and in my earbuds all week. I’d probably heard it a jillion times in my life before, but never paid much attention. Now suddenly I’m obsessed with Gloria. I have questions about the meaning of the lyrics. I have also been listening to Branigan’s other greatest hits, and reading about her life. In other words, this is also my Music For Your Weekend!

What’s a special skill that you have?
I recently learned how to use plumbers putty and teflon tape to fix the leak under my sink! A hearty thanks to the plumbers of America who make videos for YouTube.

What’s a skill you *wish* you had?
I wish I was better at telling stories. I inevitably put in too many details, get sidetracked, and lose everyone's interest before I get to my big punchline at the end.

If you were driving down the street and you saw Luke and Andrew on the sidewalk, what would you yell at them as you drove past?
I really wish I'd say "Is it too early to get a fish sandwich?" But in truth, I'd probably chicken out. I say that because I once saw Chris Hayes eating breakfast at an outdoor table at a diner in my neighborhood in central Brooklyn. I was out walking my dog and Chris was there with another person, and I *really* wanted to ask him that very question. What did I end up saying? Nothing! I said nothing. Sigh.

Can other Tens find you on social media? If so, how?
I'm not much for the socials except for LinkedIn if you count that, but you can find my free weekly newsletter of my tax prep / financial coaching business at my website, Frequently Taxed Questions.

Hey, it’s Andrew here again. Just a reminder that you can find our Ten of the Week form here! If you’ve never been a TOTW before  (or if it’s been a really, really long time) fill out our little questionnaire. And check out our Ten of the Week archive here!

#4374 Steamboat Popeye
Monday, January 6
Changes at HBO Max are getting in the way of Luke’s enjoyment of Somebody, Somewhere. Andrew also catches Luke up on the drama surrounding the resurrected mascot at the Pop-Tart Bowl. And they make their plans to profit off of Popeye The Sailor Man, now that he’s in the public domain.

#4375 The Keurig Of Bird Houses
Tuesday, January 7
Luke and Andrew each celebrate an anniversary today, which sends them down a memory lane that is perfect for losing any new listeners who may be checking out the show after hearing Luke’s story on This American Life this weekend. They also talk about old salad bars, cold restaurants, French-speaking hummingbirds, and personal thermostat preferences.

#4376 Taters Gonna Tate
Wednesday, January 8
Luke attempted a complicated recipe last night that involved one ingredient and two steps. He also shares a roundup of interesting audio, some originating from outer space, some from Cincinnati, Ohio.

#4377 Mail Privilege
Thursday, January 9
Luke wrote in to a newspaper today with a correction, but he’s not sure how to feel about that. He and Andrew also discuss the massive fires that are upending lives in Los Angeles. And Andrew has some good news after a trip to the post office.

#4378 Rolling Down The Garage Door Of Your Heart
Friday, January 10
Luke has fallen head-over-heels in love with his new, modern toilet. Andrew is surprisingly excited about something stupid called Super Wild Card Weekend. And, after an investment firm just bought up a bunch of legacy store brands, Luke and Andrew discuss modern mall culture and the olfactory pleasures of Auntie Anne’s pretzels.
