Ack. I’m mad at myself right now. Maybe if I tell you about it, I’ll feel a little better.

Hello, by the way! It’s me, Andrew, from the TBTL podcast. I hope this email finds you well.

I had a pretty tough time coming up with funny episode titles for the podcast this week. You know I love me some clever wordplay, and I love it when Luke and I come up with a good, punny zinger to slug the show. It’s such a point of pride, in fact, that I’ve taken to publishing yearly round-ups of my favorite show titles.

This week, though, I struggled. Most of the show titles were not exactly puns, but something resembling puns that don’t quite pay off. On today’s episode, for example, Luke and I discussed an Australian bunny mascot that found himself in trouble for shoving a youngster. I titled the show, “Silly Rabbit, Don’t Push The Kids.” Which is…close to a play on words, but not really? (If the story had been about kids kicking the mascot, we could have called the show “Silly Rabbit, Kicks Are For Kids”, and THAT would have been better.)

But it’s not today’s show that’s causing me the most distress. It’s Tuesday’s show, entitled In Media Res, that had me tossing and turning last night. Just so you know, that is not a play on words at all. It’s not even trying to be clever or a joke. “In media res” is just a term in storytelling that means “in the middle of things.” If a book or a movie begins in the middle of a fight scene, or in the middle of a conversation, or in the middle of a pie-eating contest, you would say it begins “in media res.”

I don’t know exactly why this concept came up during Tuesday’s show. I was trying to describe something that I recently watched or read, but I just couldn’t think of the term off the top of my head. So Luke and I floundered around a bit and talked about “in media res” for too long. Then, for lack of a better show title (and because I was in a hurry to get the podcast posted before Matlock began), I just named the show “In Media Res” and was done with it.

Fast-forward to yesterday. I’m puttering around the house, washing dishes, vacuuming floors, and mindlessly reflecting on the random stuff Luke and I have been talking about on the show this week: air shows, baseball games, Roku boxes, extension cords, Pez dispensers….

Wait! Pez dispensers?! PEZ dispensers? It hit me like a bolt of lightning. I froze, mid-vacuum, my Dyson V11 still whirring in my now frozen hand…”res” rhymes with “Pez”…

TUESDAY’S SHOW TITLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN “IN MEDIA PEZ.”

Dear reader, I’d be lying if I told you I didn’t seriously contemplate going into the system and changing the name of the show retroactively. I literally imagined a random listener opening up their podcast app on Thursday afternoon, looking down at the list of shows, and saying “I swear that show title was less funny yesterday….”

But I didn’t do that. When I commit to something, I commit to it, whether it’s a bad show title, a bad menu choice at a diner, or the decision to read an unabridged version of The Count of Monte Cristo from start to finish. (I’m now 90% through the book, by the way. At this rate, I’ll definitely finish it in under three years.)

So, I guess, I hope you’ll accept this newsletter as a sort of apology from me. I feel like I’ve let you down.

Next week, though? Why next week is a brand new opportunity to win back your trust and admiration! Or to let you down again. We’ll just see how it goes. Tune in to find out!

In the meantime, I hope you have a wonderful weekend filled with much wordplay and few regrets. Luke and I will talk to you on Monday!

Andrew: Baseball Diamond - Breathe Owl Breathe

Our friend, Ders, put this on a mixtape for me over a decade ago, and I tend to pull it out at the beginning of every baseball season. “The Boys Of Summer” it’s not, that’s for sure! But it remains my favorite baseball song, especially in the category of “baseball songs that are really about divorce and midlife crises.

Nick in Tacoma: Our Town by Iris Dement

For old-time's sake, here's what I'm listening to as I write this. Today's the one-year anniversary of my father's passing at age 74. This was his favorite song. I wish nothing but continuing health and prosperity to all those who helped make you who you are today.

#4429 I’m Bada-Booming Here!
Monday, March 24
Luke and Andrew aren’t yet ready to talk about Pez dispensers or Kyle Mooney’s new project, but they are ready to talk about what they might talk about when they are ready to talk about those topics. They also discuss the Mariner’s new app, which may make watching games easier or more difficult, depending on what you read.

#4430 In Media Res
Tuesday, March 25
Andrew received an alarming phone call last week and is still processing it. Luke is in New York, where he’s rearranging his hotel room and looking for fancy extension cords for his fancy travel bags.

#4431 Well I’ll Be Spranged
Wednesday, March 26
Luke is grumpy after a rough day of travelling, but Andrew found the perfect thing to cheer him up on an old VHS tape. Luke also has more dazzling details than you can imagine on the history of Pez dispensers!

#4432 Mr. Fubo Meets Dr. Roku
Thursday, March 27
Luke and Andrew are gearing up for baseball’s opening day by trying to figure out how the heck to watch the games. They also dive deeper into Kyle Mooney’s new record, which is probably a joke but maybe not?

#4433 Silly Rabbit, Don't Push The Kids
Friday, March 28
An anonymous listener shares a hair-raising story about getting scammed by the same “Sheriff’s Department” call that Andrew recently received. Luke and Andrew also discuss their viewing experience during baseball’s opening day. And the prime minister of Australia is getting surprisingly involved in the story of a mascot that pushed a child.
